EMU - Sofie Seyah
My first illustration for 2026 and my first in almost five months: an emu dad with his three little pyjama-clad chicks.
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae, yalabidi in Malgana language) are part of everyday life here in Shark Bay. Funny-looking feathered friends who aren’t always so friendly. Dads strolling around with their chicks, sometimes only loosely supervising — leaving them behind at the mini golf, never looking before crossing the road and leaving big, splatty poos all over the footpaths.
But they’re also, quintessentially, big feathery bush chooks doing their best to look after their brood and navigate our tiny town on the west Oz desert coast. Co-inhabitants.
Also known to steal a boiled egg straight from your hand through the car window if you’re not ready for it (my daughter can tell you ALL about that).
