ECHIDNA
Meet Kai the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and his various stages of completion.
We are really lucky to have a resident one who occasionally lumbers up our street with its funky backward-facing little feet on the hunt for termites, ants and other grubs. Quick to roll into an impenetrable ball whenever it feels threatened. And just so darn cute!
They’re known for being remarkably unique – a monotreme (egg laying mammal), more closely related to a platypus than any other species!! Their young are called puggles, but wait for it… the males have a four-headed p3nis. Dear. me. Google it yourself, it’s wild.
Amongst that, there’s so many other super interesting things about these animals. Final note – why have I named him Kai? Well, my daughter wrote and illustrated a big story about an echidna named Kai a few years back and I wanted to honour this for her. She will be stoked.
